I ran my first project as a Project Manager,
When I ran my first project as a Project Manager, I believed success meant having all the answers.
I had the plans.
I had the tools.
I had the certifications.
In my mind, a great PM was the one who could anticipate everything and never get surprised.
I worked hard—really hard.
I chased updates, over-prepared decks, joined every call, and tried to be everywhere at once.
But the real challenges weren’t in the Gantt charts. They were in the ambiguity: unclear expectations, stakeholder pressure, team dynamics, and the quiet self-doubt no one warns you about.
I was busy, but not effective.
Progress felt fragile. Every delay felt personal.
I didn’t fail because I lacked effort. I struggled because I lacked clarity.


Over the next 20 years of delivering projects, something clicked: Successful PMs don’t do more, they do the right things first.
Once I focused on clarity, leverage, and outcomes instead of activity, delivery became calmer, more predictable, and far more impactful.
